Shaken, not stirred!

Earthquakes from 1 Jan-30 April

In an average month the planet is shaken by usually no more than 2 big magnitude quakes. However in April things went off the scale. 13 earthquakes 6.5 or higher were recorded. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which issued bulletins for each one, says that is "easily a record for this institution." Five of these temblors were powerful enough that the center also put out tsunami warnings.

If you live (as I do) located on the Pacific Ring of Fire  then you will have likely experienced a tremor or two. My home town (Christchurch New Zealand) is still struggling to recover from a series of devastating earthquakes in 2011 and 2012.

According to the US Geological Survey, from 1973 until 2011, there have been 8 years that have exceeded the yearly average number of major earthquakes, 7.0 or greater. Those years were, 1976,1990,1995,1999,2007,2009,2010, and 2011. Ominously the gap between the "record" years is  exponentially decreasing.

Are these 'quakes the sign that the Bible says will be a warning of the approaching "End Times"?

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines and calamities. This is but the beginning of the intolerable anguish and suffering [only the first of the birth pangs]. Mark 13:8 AMP

There will be mighty and violent earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences (plagues: malignant and contagious or infectious epidemic diseases which are deadly and devastating); and there will be sights of terror and great signs from heaven.  Luke 21:11 AMP

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. Revelation 16:18 MKJV

Throughout history God has used earthquakes in various ways, and God's word, the Bible tells us that God has used earthquakes in history to show His presence, His deliverance, His wrath and His power. God will also use earthquakes in the future to announce Christ’s Return, accompany prophetic events, and reshape the earth’s surface.
Revelation 16:18 “And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.”

Had earthquakes been a prevalent as they are today, then there would no real concern (in a prophetic sense at least) and nor would they indicate that we are nearing the end-of-the-age. It's apparent that they are more widespread and growing in magnitude toady, than at any other time in recorded history.

Some would argue that the "upsurge" in earthquake activity is largely due to better monitoring and observation today, and this is no doubt a contributing factor to the sense that things are rattling a bit more than usual; but when the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center tells us that their recent warning bulletins were a record, then we should sit up and take notice.

If earthquakes alone were increasing in frequency and magnitude, then we could be witnessing a previously unobserved natural phenomenon: however there are many other signs that something is amiss with our world. We do indeed live in perilous times.

I will write more about these events/signs over the coming weeks.

1. Climate change
2. Moral degeneration/abandonment of the 10 commandments as basic rules of society
3. Persecution of Christians/forsaking of the faith
4. Wars and rumor of wars
5. Destruction of marriage/family values
6. False Christs and money hungry leaders.
7. Deadly diseases
8. Technological overload.

But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Matthew 24:37-39
